One of the key premises behind Hidden Fairways is that great golf does not have to be expensive. A pricey trip to a well-known golf destination is a kick. No doubt. But it's not necessary to lay out the big bucks if your bottom line is a love of the game and a simple desire for a memorable golf adventure.  Hidden Fairways is not about compromise.  Every Hidden Fairways course is exceptional, and a course we're certain you'll not only play again, but also one you'll tell your golfing friends about.  So save some money and have a great time by playing a Hidden Fairway near you soon. We genuinely appreciate a well-maintained golf course, and believe that a good golf course becomes a great golf experience if the greens roll true and a ball hit in the fairway yields a good lie. When you play a Hidden Fairway, you can expect that the owners and superintendents take maintenance very seriously. In fact, a typical Hidden Fairways golf course, with a small budget and limited staff, offers better playing conditions than many big name courses we've visited.

3. A Hidden Fairway is out of the way, in a rural or small town location.

Throughout the southern United States (especially Georgia, Alabama and South Carolina) there are many wonderful golf courses, but if a course is located in proximity to larger populations, it receives plenty of attention already. Hidden Fairways do not have the advantage of large local populations, so they seldom get the attention they deserve. They're, well... hidden. Duh.

4. A Hidden Fairway is available for public play.

In our recent travels throughout Georgia, Alabama and South Carolina, we visited many spectacular private facilities, and found many of them to be truly exceptional. But that's another story for another day. For the purposes of Hidden Fairways, our thinking is if you can't play it, it makes no sense for us to tease you. So every Hidden Fairway offers public access and will welcome your visit.

5. A Hidden Fairway is a course with a story worth telling.

This is hard to quantify. Some of the Southern golf courses we feature are simply amazing tracks, and that's the story. But there are also courses that have histories worth noting, or owners we find intriguing or communities that have pulled together to create genuinely excellent golf courses. These are the kinds of stories that, to us, are worth telling you about. And keep in mind... the bottom line when you visit a Hidden Fairway is always a great golf experience.

6. The Final Rule

There are exceptions to every qualification listed above, except the rule about public access. (We have one Hidden Fairway that IS private, but it offers access to Hidden Fairways members as "Guests of the Club") Otherwise, we look at each Hidden Fairway in total, and there are no hard and fast qualifiers or disqualifiers. For instance, if a course's superintendent is a genius who maintains his course beautifully, it may not have to have to be the most challenging course around to qualify as a Hidden Fairway. Or if a course is truly exceptional on all levels, we may choose to feature it, even if the price is a bit higher than we like to pay on a regular basis, believing the overall value justifies its inclusion. Or if a course's story is particularly engaging, it may not be necessary for it to have first class amenities. But on each course's detail page, along with describing those aspects of the course that make it one of our Hidden Fairways, we'll discuss the courses shortcomings, if any, so you won't be surprised when you show up to play.
