Hanceville, Alabama
Located just off I-65, less than 40 miles north of Birmingham, Cullman Golf Course is what most municipal golf courses aspire to be. It's well-managed, a great track, and has the enthusiastic support of the community.
The first nine holes at Cullman Golf Course were completed in 1952, and the second nine were added in '56. The story goes that a state employee named Curtis Davis built it when he didn't have other tasks keeping him busy. If the story is true, Curtis Davis was a man I wish I had met.
Building a golf course is no easy task, and he did an excellent job laying out and building a great one just off Interstate 65 about 50 miles north of Birmingham.

The course is short, playing just 6350 yards from the back tees, but elevation changes, water hazards, ditches crossing several fairways and a few well-placed bunkers will make you work for a good score. One thing you can count on is great conditioning. Superintendent, Jeff Hill, grew up around golf courses... his dad was superintendent at nearby Terri Pines Country Club... and he takes his job very seriously. This has been a tough year for golf course superintendents in the South, with much more than normal rainfall, but each time I've visited Cullman, the course has been in amazing condition, thanks to Jeff and his 3-man crew.
Cullman Golf Course has a very strong youth program, so you're likely to see teenagers walking the course almost any time you're there. All the area high schools use the course, and Director of Golf, Ches Harris, has a good group of junior players he works with.
If you're a walking golfer, Cullman Golf Course is a good course for you. The layout is very compact, with no long hikes from green to tee, and the elevation changes are gentle. If you, like me, travel with your clubs whether you have plans to play or not, and find yourself driving Interstate 65 north of Birmingham, do yourself a favor and take an 18 hole break in Hanceville, Alabama, at Cullman Golf Course. It won't be the last time you stop there.
