Ironwood Golf Club sits so near Interstate Highway 75, in Cordele, Georgia, that golfers who travel thru the South should program it into their GPS's and make it a regular stop.
The course has 5 sets of tees, and is 7015 yards long from the tips, so players of any level can get all the challenge needed to get the blood pumping. Along with the challenge, you can expect a healthy dose of enjoyment, too. For what is essentially a flat property, designer Ray Jensen put together a beautiful course. There is plenty of water around the course, and some lovely planted areas, but trees are minimal and there are no elevation changes to speak of, so it's an excellent walking course.
First opened in 1995 as Lake Blackshear Golf Club, the golf course was sold and renamed Falcon Run in 1997. In 2001, the course closed and began to deteriorate. In 2002 the current owner, Rann Folsom, purchased the rundown property for the dirt. A construction contractor, Folsom initially had no interest in the course, but when he discovered that the irrigation system was fully functional his interest grew to the point that he decided to rebuild the greens and reopened the course as Ironwood Golf Club in 2003. Way to go, Rann! I've never had the pleasure of meeting Rann Folsom, but I think I'd like him. There's something decidedly Quixotic about opening a golf course, and I've found that those who tilt at that particular windmill are often some of my favorite folks.
Ironwood Golf Club was the first course I surveyed for GolfBuddy that really tweaked my interest and started me down the path that led to the creation of Hidden Fairways, so it's pretty special to me. On that first visit, I didn't play the course, though the gentleman in the golf shop was kind enough to offer, but I knew I'd be back. And, in fact, I have been back and thoroughly enjoyed my round. Ray Jensen made great use of the flat, South Georgia landscape and created a beautiful golf course that is challenging from every set of tees and very enjoyable to play.
This is a course I can highly recommend. The past year was hard on the club, and on the community, as the course fell into disarray, due to a variety of circumstances. In the Spring of 2011, though, Stephen McIntosh purchased the course and I'm completely excited about the courses new direction. Superintendent Paul Arthur is doing an excellent job of maintaining the course, the clubhouse and practice facilities are nice, and the people who work there all seem to genuinely care about the club. So next time you're up for a golf trip, and don't want to spend yourself into bankruptcy, give it a try. You won't be disappointed.
LATE BREAKING NEWS: Ironwood is now under new ownership and they're eager to attract new golfers. To help accomplish this goal, they're offering Hidden Fairways members an astounding "Free Green fee" deal the first time you play the course. So if you're not a Hidden Fairways member yet, sign up today and take a little trip to Cordele for some free golf! You'll LOVE the course, and how can you argue with Free Golf!
