Small town muni's don't get much better than LaFayette Golf Course, in LaFayette, Georgia. This one is a perfect destination for a short golf trip from Atlanta or Chattanooga, located just off US Highway 27 about 28 miles south of Chattanooga.
The only problem I have with it is that, once you get to town, it's difficult to find. (See DIRECTIONS, below) It can be clearly seen from South Main Street, but finding an actual access point can be difficult. Once that problem is solved, though, this course is worth hunting down!

LaFayette Golf Course features a good practice range and instruction is available from Head Pro, Eddie Jackson, who has a thriving teaching program. He works with many adults, but focuses a lot of attention on his youth program. He helps coach both the high school and middle school teams and works closely with about 100 junior golfers, which is fitting since he grew up playing the course. The high school team came very close to winning the state championship last year, finishing in 3rd place.
Opened originally as a 9 hole course in 1937, a second nine was added to LaFayette Golf Course by Arthur Davis in 1992. The par 72 course features bent grass greens and hybrid bermuda grass fairways and rough, and is well taken care of by Superintendent, Rick Campbell and his crew. Four sets of tees allow players of all abilities to enjoy its wonderful layout. The front, or "original," side is relatively short but requires accuracy both off the tee and in the approach shots into small greens. Once you reach the greens, you'll find them to roll true… again, due to excellent maintenance. A few bunkers are strategically placed on just a few holes. The back, or "new," side is longer, but grass bunkers, mounds and out-of-bounds areas place a premium on club selection and strategy.
There's something about LaFayette Golf Course that's very appealing. It's not a dramatic course, with great vistas or huge elevation changes. It doesn't have a great back story, like some owner-built Hidden Fairways courses. But it's a fun place to play, with plenty of challenges. I've played it twice and both times felt like it would be great fun to bring my 18 year old son or one of my close golf buddies to share what is a traditional, small town municipal golf course that's a cut above, and not that far away.
