Old Union Golf Club is a beautiful links-style golf course outside Blairsville, Georgia designed by noted course architect, Denis Griffiths. And it's a very rare breed… a gorgeous new course, opened in the middle of our currently sad economic situation!

For those of us who play public golf this is great news, because Old Union was originally slated as a high-end private facility to serve two upscale residential communities north of Blairsville. Now, however, this wonderful new Georgia course is open to the public, and it's a real gem. Plus, there's more good news for golfers… given the fact that the course's new owners are the folks who designed and built it, ongoing excellent maintenance is a given.

Though it's only been open a few months, Old Union appears to have been in place forever... except, of course, for a bit of ongoing construction. The club house is nearing completion and there are still roads being built, but the course itself is in spectacular condition, thanks to the work of Superintendent, Jack McTyre. Griffiths' design is well worth a visit, and provides golfers of all stripes a challenging and enjoyable round of golf. The layout is excellent, with ample landing areas, generous greens and well-placed, but not overdone, bunkering. I particularly love the sharp-edged mounding around the bunkers and greens, as well as in stand-alone mounds strategically placed along many fairways. And in spite of the refined design, there's a certain wildness to the property that adds to the enjoyment of the golf. There are expansive natural areas that complement the planned areas of tall, thick grass common in links designs.

The practice area is superb, and General Manager and Director of Golf, Ryan Scott offers golf instruction at reasonable rates, so if you're working on your game, Old Union is an excellent place to do it.

Blairsville is an easy two hours north of Metro Atlanta, and is convenient to golfers from all over North Georgia and southern North Carolina. In the summer, this area of the North Georgia mountains is a busy tourist area, and there are many second homes around Blairsville, but Old Union is enough out of the way that you can expect to play a comfortably paced round almost any time of year. And believe me, you will not be disappointed if you make the trip with high expectations for a great golf outing.
