Picture of the Week
I love golf course photography. And that's a big part of why Hidden Fairways came to be. Come on... what could be more fun than watching the sun rising over a misty pond or streaming thru the trees, with a day full of gorgeous fairways and greens in my immediate future?!
But sometimes, in the early morning chill or as the last light of day seeps over the horizon, I stumble blindly onto images I can't pass up, even though they have nothing at all to do with golf. This page gives me the opportunity to share those moments of semi-focused inspiration. I hope you enjoy these little departures from the normal world of golf course photography!
I've tried to take every opportunity this winter to get out and shoot. I've been out several times to local clubs that welcome me whenever I want to shoot, but the sad fact is, a brown course with leafless trees isn't nearly as inviting... generally... as one in full Spring flower with beautiful green grasses as far as the eye can see. So what I've been doing is shooting some night shots, some sunrise shots and some shots that have nothing to do with golf, except that they exist as part of the landscapes where we play the game. This is one of those shots. I took it at The River Club in early March.

Well, once again I found myself at The River Club for the Picture of the Week! Sorry. I do love the course, though, and we did have a winter storm of historic proportions I wanted to capture on a golf course!
I call this shot "Waiting for Spring", which is exactly what I do the first time the temperatures drop below 40 degrees. I HATE the cold. I can prepare for it. I can wear long underwear, gloves, a knit cap and winter boots. But I still don't care for cold weather. I'd much rather sweat than shiver, but I guess I'll have to wait a bit for the weather to cooperate... even here in the Deep South!
Usually, when I'm shooting golf course photos, the goal is to provide the golf course in question with commercial shots of the course that can appropriately be used on its web site or in its marketing materials, but then there are those times when I just have to wander off in my own direction.

Not great timing, given that as we drove into the Philly area, the mayor was closing all the roads and cancelling the Eagles Sunday Night game. The roads were truly nasty and it was way too cold for a confirmed Southern Boy.

However, I'm not too old to embrace new technologies as I learn about them. And this week's picture is a product of my first shoot involving High Dynamic Range photography.
