Soldiers Creek Golf Course was one of those happy surprises I stumbled on while I was mapping courses for GolfBuddy. It's in the Gulf Shores area of Alabama, which isn't exactly out-of-the-way, but it's not one of the big-name courses typically associated with Alabama coast golf. Its reputation locally, though, is that it's Baldwin County's "Players Place to Play".

The first time I visited Soldier's Creek Golf Course I had no expectations, but I left feeling as if I’d discovered a genuine treasure. Driving down the first fairway, I was struck by how welcoming the course (designed by Scott Clark, course superintendent at The Peninsula Golf Club in Gulf Shores, Alabama) felt to me. It rests so comfortably on the land it occupies that it’s difficult to see the designer’s touch. To me, that’s a sign of a great design. This course is excellent for players of all levels. From the tips it plays at over 7,000 yards, while the forward tees offer just a bit over 5000 yards of play. The golf shop, though unassuming in appearance, is amply stocked to meet the needs of the visiting golfer and the practice facilities are excellent.
The owners of the course, the Woerner family, are in the sports turf business, which explains the superior conditioning of the grasses. The fairways and roughs are registered 419 Burmuda, a dense-growing emerald-colored grass that's perfect for plush fairways, and the greens are TifEagle, the newest and best-of-the-best southern turf grass for golf course greens. Soldier's Creek is a sweet treat! Ample fairways, large greens and great grasses, plus a friendly, professional staff, add up to an experience that is well worth your time. And here's a note of special interest to those who travel the country in motor homes: Soldier's Creek Golf Course sits next to a high-end Motor Home campground and bills itself as the Southeast’s only Class “A” Motor Coach Resort and Golf Club. Do I hear, "Road Trip!?"
