If you're wondering why we believe Hidden Fairways deserve more attention than they generally receive, check out this comment from golf writer, Jaime Diaz...

"In a growth spurt built on consumerism run amok, the game ended up with too much of the wrong stuff - overly watered and manicured golf courses, giant clubhouses, high green fees and membership dues, and a lot of talk about the golf industry and not enough about the golfer.  The essential game got lost."

One of the biggest surprises about Cider Ridge is that it's a municipal course in Oxford, Alabama! This gorgeous, scenic and very challenging golf course was designed by Bill Bergin, and was originally conceived as a high-end private facility.

Due to economic stresses on the original developer, the city of Oxford purchased the property and now offers great public golf at very low rates. The city has a management agreement with Honours Golf, and a series of upgrades are just around the corner.  This course is one you have to play. With its dramatic topography and bent grass greens, it is one of the southeast's most scenic championship golf courses. The good news is, it's just minutes off Interstate 20, just east of Anniston, Alabama. This beauty is ideal for a little leg-stretcher if you're traveling on the interstate, and it's not too far from either Atlanta or Birmingham if you're up for a little drive for a big golf adventure.  And to make it even more appealing, it's very inexpensive for a course of this quality.

Visit Cider Ridge's Web Site.

Cider Ridge is contoured to the land, blending in to the natural scenic surroundings with incomparable views. Local players are the majority of the golfers at Cider Ridge, and it doesn't seem to ever be too busy for a comfortable pace. Dramatic elevation changes on the back nine offer a truly beautiful round, but this course can be brutal. Play the proper tees, and bring extra balls.

The property on which Cider Ridge sits was once a very productive apple orchard. More than a hundred years ago, it produced between 7,000 and 11,000 bushels of apples each year. At its peak, the orchard produced 20,000 gallons of apple cider. Thus the name.  Seems like there should be an Apple Cider stand out by the practice tee, but sadly, there is none to be found! Wink

I've been to Cider Ridge a few times, and it's always been in great condition, thanks to the excellent work of Superintendent, Jason Edwards, and his crew. If you can put your ball generally where you want it, you'll always have a good lie. A bit off line and it's another story. All in all, Cider Ridge is a course I can highly recommend to golfers of any level.
