Now help me get out of here, would you!?

If you're wondering why we believe Hidden Fairways deserve more attention than they generally receive, check out this comment from golf writer, Jaime Diaz...

"In a growth spurt built on consumerism run amok, the game ended up with too much of the wrong stuff - overly watered and manicured golf courses, giant clubhouses, high green fees and membership dues, and a lot of talk about the golf industry and not enough about the golfer.  The essential game got lost."

Fargo Golf Course is the only 9-hole course currently listed among my Hidden Fairways. And it's also the only Hidden Fairways course with an Honor Box. This doesn't mean that there won't be others in the future, but this course deserves its unique position because it stood out among all the 9-hole courses I've visited in the past year as by far the most beautifully maintained.

What struck me about the golf course was the grass. It's a very flat course, with no bunkers to speak of, but Kevin Hart, the superintendent, does an amazing job of providing golf patrons with beautifully manicured greens and perfect fairways. My notes from my first trip to Fargo include, "There's not a weed anywhere to be found in the fairways". And it's true. My friend, the south is full of highly-regarded, very pricey private golf facilities that can't touch little Fargo for quality of maintenance.

On the down side, Fargo Golf Course has no practice range. On the upside, the price tag is so tiny that you can play 18 holes for what you'd spend on a bucket of balls at a course around Atlanta. But don't go to Fargo expecting the course to lie down and whimper as you whip it into submission. The greens are the size of my bathroom, and if you can hit one from 150 yards, you're golfing your ball! Once you do actually place a ball on a green, it will roll beautifully over the meticulously manicured surfaces.

To recommend Fargo Golf Course is to recommend Fargo, Georgia. I love it. This town of 380 folks may not sport too much night life, but the The Suwanee River Cafe is open very early for those dawn diner breakfasts I love and it has a GREAT lunch buffet. In fact, if you visit Fargo and don't eat at Suwanee River, you're a dope! Plus, the people of Fargo are as nice as you'll find... in the South or anywhere else.

If you've ever wondered where "the middle of nowhere" is... Fargo may be the answer. I don't want to discourage you from making the drive... it's well worth the effort... but it's not on the way to anything, and it's a long ways from everything.  Situated in deep South Georgia, west of the Okefenokee Wildlife Refuge, as the crow flies, it's not that far from Interstate 75 or Interstate 10. But I'm not sure crows actually fly in that part of the state! (That's a joke.  I'm sure crows actually do fly there.) I do know, though, that if you're looking for a funky, completely unique and enjoyable golf adventure, Fargo may just be the ticket.
